Worldwide, more than 3.3 billion people are at risk of Malaria. The most high-risk populations include areas of Africa, South-East Asia, the Eastern Mediterranean, and the Americas.
The disease is particularly devastating in Africa, where one child dies from Malaria every 30 seconds. In fact, malaria kills more people in Africa than any other single disease.
Malaria causes Africa to suffer an estimated $12 billion in economic losses annually, taking a devastating toll, particularly on the rural poor. Impoverished families, in most cases, can neither afford a bed net for protection of access adequate medical care when they fall ill.
Many children who survive a Malaria episode can suffer later from learning impairments and/ or brain damage. Pregnant women and their unborn children are at an even greater risk, as Malaria can be a major cause of maternal anemia, low birth weight and mortality.
